Role overview
CATL is hiring a full-time Financial Modeller based in Australia for a remote position. This role sits within the UK and European business development function and focuses on supporting energy storage project development through robust operating and financial modelling, funding and financing work, and commercial analysis for infrastructure projects. The position requires close coordination with colleagues across multiple disciplines and regions, especially in investment and financing activities worldwide.
The successful candidate will use technical financial expertise together with knowledge of market behaviour, policy, and project economics to identify opportunities, reduce exposure to risk, and strengthen return on investment. The team is expanding to support a growing pipeline of international opportunities across battery energy storage system (BESS) projects.
Key responsibilities
- Take ownership of financial workstreams on projects and make sure best-practice methods are used consistently, with full alignment to project team inputs.
- Track and interpret electricity market structures, pricing systems, ancillary service demand, and pricing movements across the UK, Europe, and APAC.
- Design, build, and validate business and financial models that support advice informed by external consultants.
- Drive the creation of funding approaches and financial business cases for international BESS developments.
- Review and assure operating and financial models for standalone as well as co-located BESS projects.
- Develop, assess, and refine financial models such as LCOE, NPV, and IRR, including scenario testing and risk evaluation.
- Work across functions to coordinate delivery between project teams and internal stakeholders.
- Perform internal quality reviews of modelling outputs prepared by others in line with CATL quality management processes.
- Identify business opportunities, prepare proposals for M&A opportunities, and support business development activities in the UK, EU, and APAC.
- Contribute to team capability building by supporting the growth of other team members.
- Share expertise through formal training sessions, seminars, and workshops to help develop staff knowledge and skills.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in the energy or power sector, with exposure to both technical and financial modelling.
- Strong command of financial modelling and investment analysis, including the ability to create complex project models.
- Experience building flexible, robust, and user-friendly forecasting models, with the ability to source inputs and present key outputs to senior leadership.
- Background in Australia’s energy storage project development, M&A, or asset rotation is expected.
- Experience preparing funding strategies and financial cases, ideally within renewable energy.
- Project management experience, including budget handling, workstream coordination, and participation in M&A proposal development.
- Prior exposure to consulting, multidisciplinary renewable teams, or a business environment focused on commercial and financial evaluation is preferred, though other relevant backgrounds may also be considered.
- Ability to build effective working relationships and collaborate across teams to deliver the best outcome.
- Comfortable working in a team-oriented environment and contributing across disciplines.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills, with the ability to explain technical topics to non-technical audiences.
- Master’s degree in Business, Engineering, or a related field.
- Fluent English is required; additional languages are beneficial.
- Willingness to travel frequently between China and Australia.
- Experience in model assurance, renewable energy, policy/regulatory/commercial analysis, professional accounting or finance qualifications, data analysis and visualization tools, and VBA in Microsoft Excel are all advantageous.
Additional information
This position is focused on international BESS projects and works across UK, European, and APAC markets. Candidates should be comfortable supporting cross-border collaboration and commercial decision-making in a fast-growing global environment.
