Role overview

We are hiring an experienced IT Operations Engineer to join the internal IT team in support of the ARO Group’s technology strategy. In this role, you will help shape and run a high-quality IT environment that enables colleagues to work effectively and supports the organisation’s wider goals.

The position suits someone who enjoys supporting others, improving systems, and contributing ideas for better ways of working. You will work alongside the IT Manager to spot new technologies and practical opportunities for innovation across the IT platform. A key part of the job is helping improve efficiency, cost control, and scalability so that technology continues to support business growth.

You will interact with colleagues across all levels of the business and across multiple sites. The role offers hybrid working, with three days per week required on-site in Liverpool and occasional travel to other UK locations. You must be able to travel to the office and have your own transport.

This is a permanent position with a salary of up to £40,000.

Key duties

  • Make sure service delivery continues to meet business expectations.
  • Design, implement, support, and improve the IT platform so it helps the Group achieve commercial targets.
  • Work closely with subject matter experts for core business applications to improve efficiency and operational performance.
  • Regularly assess the internal IT environment to keep it resilient, flexible, and cost-effective.
  • Maintain strong information security practices in line with ISO 27001 requirements.
  • Build a solid understanding of how the Group operates so IT can provide real business value.
  • Develop strong working relationships across the organisation and communicate effectively with stakeholders and colleagues.
  • Take a proactive approach to system hygiene and housekeeping.
  • Manage, administer, deploy, and configure the ARO server estate, including Active Directory and Group Policy.
  • Oversee O365 governance, Active Directory hygiene, and wider Microsoft licensing control.
  • Help drive a more strategic approach to the Microsoft Azure platform.
  • Administer, deploy, and configure Microsoft Exchange Server.
  • Support reliability, availability, and serviceability across the IT platform.
  • Work with the IT Manager to strengthen continuous improvement within internal IT.
  • Provide technical support to team members and colleagues both remotely and on-site as needed.
  • Keep system hygiene at a consistently high standard.

What we are looking for

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in IT infrastructure and networking.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft licensing.
  • Strong hands-on ability with Windows Server, Active Directory, Exchange, Hyper-V, and networking technologies.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS.
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills for resolving complex technical issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a collaborative working style.
  • The ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks in a busy environment.
  • Experience in an ITIL-based environment is preferred.

Essential technical knowledge

  • Server operating systems, including Microsoft Server 2022 and earlier versions.
  • Good working knowledge of Azure.
  • Understanding of physical and virtual server farms.
  • Awareness of how multiple endpoints and servers interact in a mixed environment.
  • Knowledge of information security best practices aligned to ISO 27001.
  • Solid understanding of O365 administration and deployment, including Intune.
  • Experience with server virtualisation platforms such as Microsoft Azure and Hyper-V.
  • Experience with Veeam.
  • Ability to configure server hardware and recommend suitable setups.
  • Knowledge of Wi-Fi solutions such as Ubiquiti or Meraki.
  • Understanding of IP troubleshooting, including DHCP, DNS, and IP addressing.
