Shift Lead

Role overview

The Shift Lead supports store operations in a Walgreens location in Hammond, Indiana, especially when store management is not present. This position helps keep the store ready for business, supports teammates, and helps ensure customers receive consistent service throughout the day.

Key duties

• Unlock and secure the store when management is unavailable, complete system start-up tasks, handle opening cash procedures, prepare the sales floor and stockroom, and open the rear door for deliveries.
• Process returns, cancelled orders, customer reimbursements, cash transfers to the safe, and cash change requests for registers.
• Deliver a welcoming and attentive customer experience by greeting shoppers and patients, offering help, solving concerns, and answering questions.
• Demonstrate strong customer service habits and coach teammates on the service standards expected in the store.
• Maintain possession of store keys and use them to open and close the store as needed.
• Support warehouse and vendor ordering activities, including receiving orders and opening the back door for vendor drop-offs.
• Ring up sales on the assigned register and help with transaction corrections such as scan errors, price checks, items not found in the system, price adjustments, and voids.
• Help the manager or assistant manager review order exceptions and assist with reverse logistics such as returns and damaged or empty packaging.
• Support the creation, review, and upkeep of promotional, seasonal, sale, and display setups; complete resets and plan changes.
• Keep inventory records accurate, including stockroom, overstock, and core department quantities.
• Help ensure outdated-item procedures are followed by the team.
• Make daily price updates, maintain correct shelf signage, and complete pricing-related compliance tasks within required timelines.
• Assist with bookkeeping tasks such as cash reports, cash counts, ledgers, and bill payments when needed.
• Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe store inside and outside, and request repairs when management is absent or as directed.
• Follow policies for separating food items, stocking products correctly, rotating consumable inventory using FIFO, and replenishing out-of-stock items.
• Use store systems and equipment effectively.
• Assist at the pharmacy window when requested.
• Ensure regulated products are handled in line with state and local requirements, including alcohol and tobacco rules.
• Perform bag checks for team members before they leave the store.
• Follow company policies, maintain respectful workplace relationships, complete assigned special projects, and take on other duties as needed.
• Act as the communication link between management and non-management staff when leadership is unavailable, and relay assigned tasks to the team.
• Escalate disciplinary concerns and customer complaints to management.

Training and development

• Attend assigned training sessions and complete required PPLs requested by the manager.

Qualifications

• At least 1 year of prior experience in leadership, supervision, or a retail key-holder role.
• Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently, except where not required in Puerto Rico.
• Knowledge of store inventory control is preferred.
• Must be able to obtain and keep a valid PTCB certification or pharmacy license if required by the state.

Compensation

Expected hourly pay: $17 to $20.
