Role Overview
This position is for an experienced software engineer who can support the training and assessment of next-generation AI systems by completing practical engineering work. The role is remote and suited to people who are comfortable tackling unfamiliar codebases, making sound technical judgments, and working through backend, full-stack, systems, or infrastructure challenges.
The work does not require prior AI-specific experience. The main expectations are strong engineering judgment, clear written communication, and the ability to assess code quality, architecture, trade-offs, and implementation choices.
Working Arrangement
This is a contractor role with an expected commitment of 10 to 12 hours per week. The job is remote and based in Ireland.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle demanding software engineering assignments spanning backend, full-stack, infrastructure, and systems-oriented work.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, refine, and explain code across different technical setups.
- Build or assess practical solutions involving APIs, databases, services, third-party integrations, testing, and deployment processes.
- Evaluate trade-offs related to scalability, maintainability, speed, reliability, security, and developer productivity.
- Document technical reasoning clearly in writing, including why a solution is effective and what other approaches were considered.
- Work with the client team on reviews, implementation choices, and structured problem-solving exercises.
- Quickly learn and adapt to new codebases, frameworks, and technical expectations.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- At least 5 years of practical software engineering experience.
- Strong background in at least one backend or full-stack stack such as Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, Java, C#, .NET, C++, Go, Ruby, PHP, or similar technologies.
- Experience creating, supporting, or reviewing production-grade applications, APIs, services, databases, or integrations.
- Solid grasp of engineering fundamentals, including debugging, testing, code quality, architecture, and technical decision-making.
- Ability to communicate complex technical choices in a clear and objective way.
- Comfort reading and analyzing unfamiliar code or technical requirements.
Preferred Experience
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD, DevOps practices, containers, monitoring, or production support workflows.
- Familiarity with frontend frameworks such as React, Next.js, Angular, Vue, or React Native.
- Evidence of open-source contributions, public GitHub projects, technical writing, or other strong engineering samples.
- Background in mentoring developers, reviewing code, or making architecture-level decisions.
