Position overview
The City of Lufkin is seeking a Parks Superintendent to lead the Parks maintenance division within the Parks and Recreation Department. Reporting to the Parks and Recreation Director, this exempt role is responsible for maintaining high standards across city parks, athletic facilities, and landscaped areas while supporting the department’s broader mission and community relationships.
What the role involves
- Guide the planning, upkeep, development, and enhancement of parks and landscaped spaces across the city.
- Lead day-to-day operations for park maintenance teams to keep work efficient and effective.
- Apply supervisory practices in line with city policy and applicable legal requirements.
- Oversee the department budget, track spending, and recommend how resources should be allocated.
- Create and carry out long-range plans for mowing, maintenance, and improvements to parks, athletic facilities, and city-owned landscaped areas.
- Participate in hiring, onboarding, training, work assignment, performance reviews, recognition, discipline, complaint handling, and conflict resolution for maintenance staff.
- Maintain and enforce safety procedures to protect employees and park visitors.
- Inspect park equipment regularly and make sure maintenance issues are addressed quickly.
- Work with other city departments and external partners to support events hosted in parks and other city properties.
- Stay current on park management trends, best practices, and new approaches.
- Handle additional duties as needed.
Qualifications and requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
- A bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Science, or a similar discipline is preferred.
- At least five years of supervisory experience is required; experience in park management is an advantage.
- A valid Class C driver’s license must be in place at the time of hire.
- A CDL is preferred.
- The ability to work evenings and weekends when events or emergencies demand it is necessary.
- A Certified Playground Safety Inspector credential from the National Recreation and Park Association is required, or it must be earned within the first year of employment.
- A Pesticide Applicator license must be obtained within one year of joining.
Knowledge and abilities
- Understanding of landscape design, horticulture, and park maintenance methods.
- Working knowledge of budgeting and financial reporting.
- Familiarity with applicable local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
- Strong leadership, planning, and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to produce clear, concise written and electronic reports.
- Capability to work closely with city departments and community partners.
Compensation
Pay starts at $61,976 per year and may vary depending on qualifications.
