Role overview

Crate & Barrel is seeking a Designer in Washington, DC to help shoppers imagine and create beautiful living spaces. In this position, you will use your design knowledge and consultative selling approach to support customers planning anything from a full-room refresh to a single statement item. The role blends creativity, sales, customer service, and store collaboration in a fast-paced retail setting.

What you will do

• Deliver a distinctive customer experience through engaging design conversations in the store, at a customer’s home, and through virtual appointments.
• Develop elevated design concepts using preferred tools, including mood boards, 2D and 3D floor plans, product selections, and customer-facing presentations.
• Run design consultations across in-store, in-home, email, phone, and virtual channels.
• Complete projects promptly and within agreed timelines.
• Apply knowledge of brand aesthetics and merchandising direction across store, e-commerce, and catalog channels.
• Stay current on product details, care instructions, competitor offerings, and broader industry trends.
• Meet individual sales, KPI, service, and productivity expectations while actively engaging customers on the sales floor.
• Identify customer needs and recommend appropriate products, while explaining loyalty and design service programs such as designer rewards, Design Trade Program, and credit card offerings.
• Maintain a friendly, responsive, and efficient service standard for every customer interaction.
• Help train store teams on design services and offerings so the business can better communicate them to customers.
• Build durable client relationships through networking and clienteling.
• Use spatial planning, fabric selection, lighting, and interior style knowledge to guide recommendations.
• Communicate clearly and promptly while translating the brand vision and customer needs into workable solutions.
• Use technology confidently, including 2D and 3D design tools, Google Workspace, video conferencing, and iPad-based planning tools.
• Stay adaptable as design trends, store needs, and business priorities evolve.

What we are looking for

• Knowledge of core design concepts such as spatial planning, fabric selection, lighting, and interior design styles.
• Strong, timely communication skills with the ability to interpret both brand direction and customer preferences.
• Comfort using design technology, Google tools, virtual meeting platforms, and floor-planning software.
• Awareness of current home design trends and willingness to keep learning.
• Demonstrated ability to build long-term customer relationships.
• At least 1 year of relevant experience in furniture sales, home décor design, retail, or customer service.
• Experience working one-on-one with clients and recommending practical solutions.
• Prior use of Google platforms and virtual communication tools; design software experience is preferred.
