Role overview
The Planning Engineer will help keep projects on track by building realistic schedules, tracking progress, and flagging schedule risks early. The role involves working with different project functions to make sure timelines, budgets, quality targets, and resource use stay aligned throughout the project lifecycle.
Project planning and scheduling
- Create detailed project programs using tools such as Primavera P6 or MS Project, ensuring they follow contract requirements and the work breakdown structure.
- Set out activity sequences, milestones, and critical paths so the project can move forward without unnecessary delays.
- Prepare baseline schedules and keep them accurate through timely revisions and updates.
Progress tracking and reporting
- Measure actual progress against the approved plan and identify delays, slippages, or emerging risks.
- Compile daily, weekly, and monthly reports, dashboards, and schedule explanations for management review.
- Perform schedule variance checks, critical path reviews, and scenario analyses to support decision-making.
Coordination and stakeholder support
- Work closely with project managers, site engineers, procurement teams, subcontractors, and clients to keep execution aligned with the approved schedule.
- Take part in project meetings, planning workshops, and coordination reviews, contributing planning insights.
- Assist with claims, extension of time requests, and change management by providing reliable schedule records and analysis.
Resource and cost planning support
- Support manpower, equipment, and resource planning to improve utilization across the project.
- Coordinate with cost control and commercial teams to align schedules with budgets and cash flow forecasts.
- Contribute to earned value analysis and productivity monitoring where required.
Risk, delay, and compliance management
- Spot time-related, sequencing, and resource-related risks before they affect delivery.
- Recommend recovery plans and mitigation measures to reduce delays.
- Keep planning risk logs and lessons learned records for ongoing improvement.
- Maintain schedules, revisions, and reports according to project and company procedures, and support audits, reviews, and project close-out activities.
Working conditions
The position is primarily office-based, with regular site visits depending on project requirements. Extended working hours may be needed during critical stages of the project.
Qualifications and experience
A bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical) or Construction Management is required. The role calls for 3 to 8 years of relevant experience as a Planning Engineer, ideally in construction, EPC, oil and gas, or infrastructure projects. Experience on large-scale, multi-stakeholder projects is preferred.
Skills and competencies
- Strong command of planning and scheduling tools such as Primavera P6 and/or MS Project.
- Solid understanding of CPM, project scheduling methods, and progress measurement techniques.
- Working knowledge of construction methods, project controls, and basic cost control.
- Strong analytical ability to work with complex project data.
- Excellent organization, prioritization, and time management.
- Clear written and verbal communication for reporting and coordination.
- Comfortable working with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
- Confident presenting planning information to managers and clients.

Reporting line
The role reports to the Project Control Manager or Project Manager.
