Role overview
General Motors is reshaping the automotive experience through its next-generation software-defined vehicle platform. Data sits at the center of this effort, enabling safer driving, personalized experiences, better energy use, and smoother interactions. To support this mission, the company is expanding its Site Reliability Engineering organization to keep the data platform dependable, fast, and able to scale across millions of connected vehicles.
This position is for a hands-on Engineering Manager with strong experience in SRE, cloud operations, and owning complex technical work end to end. The role is roughly 80% engineering and 20% people leadership, and it involves guiding a small group of 8 engineers while staying deeply involved in building and improving the reliability of customer-facing systems.
What you will do
- Design and deliver resilient, highly scalable, and observable infrastructure for telemetry, data ingestion, and platform operations.
- Stay actively involved in the technical work by writing code, reviewing architecture and pull requests, and clearing blockers on critical reliability initiatives.
- Strengthen system stability through better configuration management, infrastructure modernization, and testing approaches.
- Work closely with SRE, engineering, and product partners to improve service reliability, safer deployments, and incident handling.
- Advise on reliability standards for new products and customer-facing applications, and explain technical trade-offs clearly to leadership.
- Develop the observability approach using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Datadog, with automated alerting and SLO-focused dashboards.
- Own on-call operations, lead blameless postmortems, and drive root cause analysis to prevent repeat failures.
- Coach, support, and grow a team of 8 engineers while building a culture of accountability, ownership, and operational excellence.
- Help with hiring and onboarding, and foster psychological safety while navigating ambiguity and change.
- Contribute to compliance- and privacy-related engineering efforts, including possible work around data retention and safety certification tooling.
What you bring
- At least 8 years of experience in SRE, DevOps, or systems engineering, including leadership through mentoring, technical guidance, and people management.
- Proven success building and maintaining large-scale cloud-native platforms, preferably on AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Strong experience with Kubernetes and CI/CD pipelines, including deployment and orchestration practices.
- Hands-on coding ability in Python, Go, or Java, along with a high standard for code quality and review.
- Background leading infrastructure initiatives across teams while balancing reliability, speed, and cost.
- Ability to stay calm and effective under pressure, whether resolving incidents or prioritizing competing demands.
- Exposure to privacy engineering, data security, or compliance-oriented environments is beneficial.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to influence stakeholders at different levels by connecting technical risk to business impact.
- Strong people leadership skills, including coaching, feedback, conflict resolution, and creating an inclusive team environment.
