Role Overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is looking for a Railroad Flagger to support safe track operations in Lafayette, Louisiana. In this field-based role, you will help protect crews working on or near railroad tracks by managing train movements and ensuring compliance with federal rail safety standards. The position supports large railroads, short line railroads, transit agencies, state transportation projects, and contractors.
This is a full-time onsite position reporting to the District Manager. Travel is a major part of the job and is expected to range from 50% to 85% on average, with the possibility of spending extended periods away from home.
Pay is listed at $25 to $37 per hour, depending on experience.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate day-to-day work activities at the project site.
- Maintain clear communication with dispatchers, train crews, railroad employees, and contractors.
- Conduct safety briefings before work starts.
- Apply and enforce railroad, state, and federal safety rules.
- Verify that contractors meet required training standards.
- Identify and correct unsafe practices or rule violations.
- Prepare daily reports covering work progress and site activity.
- Support on-track safety in line with federal regulations.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience with a Class 1 railroad, regional short line, transit system, State DOT rail division, railroad supplier, railroad contractor, or railroad consultant; experience in Maintenance of Way (MOW) is preferred.
- Comfort with basic computer tools such as Citrix, email, phone applications, and texting platforms.
- Ability to use Android tablets and smartphones.
- Strong organization skills and close attention to detail.
- Good spoken and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety practices.
- Ability to develop and sustain strong client relationships.
- Willingness to travel for long stretches, including periods that may last months.
- Completion of required federal, client, and company training.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English, including speaking, reading, and writing.
- Must be able to stand for long periods and walk on uneven surfaces.
- Must be able to work in extreme heat and cold, as well as dusty and noisy environments.
- Must have good vision, including near, far, color, and peripheral vision.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be willing to travel or drive long distances.
- Must be able to pass pre-employment and recurring background checks, drug/alcohol testing, and classroom training.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
