Role overview
This position leads Environment, Health and Safety activities for the plant, with responsibility for strengthening compliance, improving workplace safety, and ensuring environmental controls remain effective throughout operations.
Key responsibilities
The role covers planning, execution, monitoring, training, audit support, and statutory coordination across the plant.
- Roll out standardized EHS processes at plant level in line with internal policies and procedures.
- Design and implement control measures to keep air, noise, water, and land pollution parameters within statutory limits throughout the year.
- Work with concerned teams to run safety campaigns, contests, mock drills, training sessions, and recognition programs that sustain employee engagement in safe practices.
- Plan actions to reduce personal injuries and maintain a safe working environment.
- Coordinate management review meetings and present EHSMS performance updates for review.
- Prepare the EHS budget for improvement activities and projects, and ensure required resources are available.
Safety responsibilities
- Prepare, update, and test the onsite emergency preparedness plan on the prescribed schedule.
- Implement safety standards, spot unsafe acts and hazards, and recommend corrective actions to line management.
- Guide factory departments on the safety measures they need to adopt.
- Set up and support the safety committee, acting as an advisor and driver of improvement.
- Investigate industrial accidents and occupational diseases, while maintaining statutory records.
- Conduct plant safety inspections to review work conditions, practices, and procedures, then document findings and drive corrective and preventive actions.
- Develop safety action plans and perform detailed incident and accident investigations to identify root causes and track corrective measures.
Health responsibilities
- Identify health-related unsafe conditions and take suitable corrective action.
- Ensure proper availability and use of personal protective equipment across the plant.
- Assess how manufacturing processes affect employee health, determine root causes, and implement corrective measures.
- Organize periodic medical examinations and annual health check-ups as required by law, maintain records, and report outcomes to senior management.
Environmental responsibilities
- Track and monitor key environmental parameters at the required frequency.
- Build environmental capability across the organization and supply chain.
- Create and drive environmental control plans by reviewing existing practices, identifying hazards, and ensuring compliance with statutory norms.
- Ensure proper operation of ETP and STP systems and coordinate with government authorities as needed.
Compliance and liaison
- Support HR in coordinating with external bodies such as the pollution control board, NGT, CGWA, and MoEF to maintain smooth operations.
- Advise and assist factory management in meeting obligations under the Factories Act, 1948, and the related rules.
Audit responsibilities
- Plan, schedule, and carry out internal EHSMS audits to assess adequacy, compliance, and effectiveness of the management system.
- Audit firefighting equipment, PPE, lifting tools, and tackles at the plant, and ensure corrective actions are completed.
- Maintain compliance with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 requirements as per the Varroc EHS Excellence Manual.
Training responsibilities
- Identify EHS training needs and prepare competency mapping and a skill matrix to close capability gaps with department and HR support.
- Build annual, monthly, or weekly training plans with HR.
- Arrange internal and external training resources and define ways to measure training effectiveness in consultation with HR.
- Conduct induction, on-the-job, classroom, and visitor training sessions.
Qualifications and experience
The ideal candidate should have a degree in physics, chemistry, engineering, or technology, or a diploma in engineering. ADIS or PDIS is mandatory. Preferred qualifications include NEBOSH, Lead Auditor certification for ISO 14001/45001, or a diploma/degree in environmental science. The role requires 8 to 15 years of experience, along with practical knowledge of manufacturing processes, liaisoning ability, strong interpersonal skills, and effective communication and influencing skills.
