Role overview

The Material Handler supports production flow on the shop floor by keeping standard work-in-progress levels within target, placing parts in their assigned locations, and making sure material moves in step with the line’s production needs. The role helps maintain continuity in production by ensuring operators receive the correct material, at the right workstation, at the right time.

This position also involves monitoring line performance against takt time and cycle time, following piece movement after takt completion, identifying anything unusual, and escalating issues that could affect output. The role contributes to Standard Work, Standard Work Combination Sheet adherence, Lean practices, and smooth day-to-day line execution.

Key responsibilities

  • Keep STD WIP levels at the required level to support balanced flow and uninterrupted production.
  • Place and maintain components in the correct designated locations across the shop floor.
  • Support single-piece flow to improve movement through the line and avoid excess WIP.
  • Track part movement after takt completion so items are transferred correctly between stations.
  • Observe material flow and line condition to maintain readiness for production.
  • Flag situations where cycle time goes beyond takt time and report abnormalities that may affect performance.
  • Support compliance with Standard Work and Standard Work Combination Sheets throughout the line.
  • Stay aware of the full line process to help coordinate proper part movement.
  • Work with operators and supervisors to ensure materials are available at the correct station when needed.
  • Assist with visual management and line organization to improve clarity and flow.
  • Keep the work area clean, safe, and orderly in line with 5S expectations.
  • Apply Lean principles consistently in daily work.
  • Spot opportunities to improve flow, reduce cycle time, cut waste, and strengthen workplace organization.
  • Contribute to problem solving and corrective actions tied to material flow, WIP control, and process disruptions.
  • Work according to takt time and standard process flow requirements to help meet production targets.
  • Use shop floor systems and interfaces when needed, including ELM, SmartShop, and MyAndon.
  • Follow company quality rules, safety requirements, procedures, and standard work.

Requirements

  • A diploma, technical college qualification, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Background in manufacturing, material handling, production support, or an industrial setting.
  • At least 3 years of experience in Weld Repair or CNC Machining.
  • At least 2 years of experience supervising people.
  • Working knowledge of Lean manufacturing, 5S, visual management, and continuous improvement tools.
  • Ability to recognize abnormalities and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Familiarity with shop floor tools such as ELM, SmartShop, and MyAndon.
  • At least 2 years of experience handling gas turbine components or similar precision aerospace/industrial parts.
