FTTX Engineer/Technician

Role overview

This position focuses on keeping the active FTTx network running smoothly day to day. The engineer/technician will support operations, maintenance, updates, records control, and technical troubleshooting across the fiber access network to maintain continuity and network reliability.

Core responsibilities

• Carry out fiber patching and install GPON/XGPON cards along with the related hardware.
• Maintain and refresh network topology information and keep OLT as-built documentation accurate.
• Handle daily Network Engineering Records (NER) tasks and protect the quality of network data.
• Update GIS records and inventory databases tied to the FTTx active network.
• Install and commission active network assets such as OLTs, UPEs, and transport equipment.
• Complete AC/DC power connections and perform hardware integration work.
• Support network growth by fitting service boards and modules.
• Diagnose and resolve issues involving fiber patching, SFP modules, and connectivity.
• Record and apply changes to network topology in a clear and controlled way.
• Use network management and inventory tools for monitoring and record upkeep.
• Work with engineering teams and other stakeholders to meet operational needs.
• Be available for urgent maintenance work and occasional holiday support when required.
• Follow established network standards, procedures, and compliance requirements.

Qualifications and experience

• A diploma or bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or a closely related discipline is required.
• At least 3 years of experience in FTTx active network operations, maintenance, or automation-related projects is needed.
• Practical experience with Huawei OLT platforms, including MA5600T, MA5608T, and MA5800 series, is expected.
• Working knowledge of GPON and XGPON technologies and the associated service boards is required.
• Strong understanding of OSP network design, including splitters and ODF configurations, is necessary.
• Familiarity with WDM-based GPON/XGPON coexistence and migration concepts is expected.
• Experience using GIS applications, inventory systems, and network management platforms such as Huawei U2000 or similar tools is required.
• Knowledge of fiber patching methods, SFP modules, and troubleshooting practices is important.
• Ability to interpret, apply, and document network topology changes is required.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office is expected.
• Strong analytical ability, problem-solving skills, and communication skills are needed.
• Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is required.
• A valid Qatar driving license is mandatory.

Working conditions

• This is a full-time resident role with on-site attendance required.
• The schedule follows standard business hours.
• The role may require emergency maintenance support and occasional work on holidays.
• This is a long-term assignment supporting ongoing FTTx network operations.

Preferred background

• Previous exposure to telecommunications service provider environments is an advantage.
• Experience with GIS and inventory platforms used in large-scale fiber access networks is preferred.
• Background in BAU support and Network Engineering Records activities is useful.
• Immediate joining or availability on short notice is preferred.
