About the Client

The hiring organization is part of the academic healthcare environment, where accurate clinical information management plays a key role in medical record quality. Its work supports medical progress and community health by ensuring documentation and coding are handled with precision. The program serves a large health system and is closely tied to quality reporting and reimbursement outcomes that influence both patient care and operational performance.

Role Overview

This position focuses on reviewing inpatient and outpatient medical records to identify diagnoses and procedures and translate them into the correct clinical codes. The role helps ensure that health data is captured accurately, reimbursement is processed on time, and quality reporting remains reliable. It also supports the integrity of the medical record and the financial stability of the organization through compliant coding practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply ICD-10-CM/PCS codes and DRGs to inpatient accounts, and ICD-10-CM/PCS plus CPT codes to outpatient accounts.
  • Pull out the core data needed for billing and related administrative processes.
  • Examine records to determine their clinical significance.
  • Work with providers to resolve unclear documentation and share guidance on documentation quality.
  • Code and abstract records for patients who are still admitted when interim billing is required.
  • Screen records to flag cases that should be reviewed by a physician under established criteria.
  • Coordinate with medical staff to ensure diagnoses and procedures are assigned correctly.
  • Keep required continuing education credits current in line with professional standards.

Requirements

  • An associate degree or a bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Professional certification must be held as RHIT, RHIA, or CCS.
  • Strong command of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, DRG methodology, and reimbursement rules is necessary.
  • Experience using hospital information systems, electronic medical records, coding encoders, and JCAHO chart completion expectations is important.
  • The candidate should understand medical confidentiality obligations and handle patient records securely.
  • Comfort using personal computers is required.

Compensation

Compensation will be set according to the candidate’s background, skills, and other relevant considerations. A fixed salary range was not provided.

Equal Opportunity

The employer is committed to equal employment opportunity and values a diverse, inclusive workplace. All qualified applicants will be considered without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or national origin.

Important Note

This opportunity is being shared by a recruiting partner that is not the employer of record. Applicants will need to complete the application directly through the hiring organization’s career page or applicant tracking system.
