Job description
Role Overview
A recruitment agency is looking for an Estimator to support a special projects team in Braintree on a permanent, full-time basis. The position sits within a well-established engineering company that delivers highly customised work across a range of sectors. It suits someone who is comfortable taking initiative, solving problems, and digging deeper than standard pricing tasks to fully understand each assignment.
What You’ll Be Doing
The main aim of the role is to produce accurate and commercially sensible quotations for bespoke engineering enquiries. This is not a conventional estimating position: it calls for a hands-on, investigative approach to understand scope, materials, and technical needs in detail. You will own each enquiry from the first review through to the final quote, making sure every component is properly assessed and costed.
- Review technical drawings and specifications to create detailed, precise cost estimates.
- Own enquiries end to end, from initial assessment through to quotation submission.
- Work on highly bespoke projects where each job requires a tailored approach.
- Coordinate with design, production, and sales teams to obtain technical input.
- Identify and obtain pricing for materials, components, and specialist external services.
- Look beyond the initial documentation to uncover missing details, alternative options, and possible risks.
- Develop thorough cost models that capture all project elements.
- Prepare technical and commercial submissions for tender opportunities.
- Assist with the transfer of awarded work to the delivery and operations team.
Required Experience and Skills
Applicants should bring prior experience in estimating, engineering, or a related technical setting. The role requires the ability to understand technical drawings, sound commercial judgement, and a strong eye for detail. You should also be comfortable working with Microsoft Excel and standard IT systems, and be able to communicate clearly in writing and in conversation. A proactive, self-directed mindset is important, as the job involves questioning assumptions, investigating issues, and solving problems independently. Experience in fabrication, steelwork, construction, or engineering would be advantageous. Strong organisation and the ability to handle several projects at once are also important.

This is a full-time, permanent position based onsite in Braintree, England, United Kingdom. The role is offered by Market 36 Recruitment on behalf of its client.
