Job description
About the Organization
Land’s Sake Farm is a nonprofit community farm in Weston, Massachusetts. Its purpose is to connect people with the land, strengthen community ties, and encourage lifelong care for the environment. Over the past four decades, it has become a lively gathering place where sustainable agriculture, learning, and community programs come together.
The organization runs a diversified, mission-led operation with an annual budget of about $3 million. It cares for more than 46 acres of conservation and farm land, grows over 40 kinds of produce, and operates a year-round farmstand offering both Land’s Sake products and locally sourced goods. Its work spans sustainable farming and food production, hunger relief, education, community events and engagement, as well as forestry and maple operations. Through regional partnerships, most of the donated food reaches households across Greater Boston and MetroWest.
After completing a successful capital campaign of more than $6.5 million, the farm now has a net-zero farmstand, expanded greenhouse and education spaces, and year-round utilities. The next Executive Director will help carry this momentum forward, deepen the organization’s reach, strengthen its finances, and support long-term sustainability. The role is highly visible and involves close work with the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners.
Key Responsibilities
The Executive Director will set direction, build support, and keep the organization running effectively across all programs and operations.
- Create and carry out a strategic direction that strengthens mission clarity, growth, and long-term stability.
- Work with the Board and senior leadership to define priorities, turn them into actionable plans, and ensure the organization’s impact is communicated clearly.
- Lead fundraising efforts, serving as the primary fundraiser and helping expand support from individuals, foundations, and corporate partners.
- Engage board members as active partners in fundraising and relationship-building.
- Oversee financial planning and budgeting for an annual budget of approximately $3 million.
- Maintain responsible fiscal management and ensure effective systems and processes across farming, retail, education, events, and hunger-relief work.
- Supervise, support, and develop senior staff across different functional areas.
- Foster a workplace culture rooted in collaboration, openness, accountability, and trust.
- Partner with the Board on governance, planning materials, board development, and board diversification.
- Act as a visible ambassador for the organization and build relationships with the Town of Weston, hunger-relief groups, education partners, and advisory stakeholders.
What We’re Looking For
Ideal candidates will be deeply aligned with the farm’s mission and bring strong nonprofit leadership, fundraising, and people-management experience.
- Strong commitment to the organization’s values, including stewardship of the land, equitable access to food and education, and the role of community institutions in public life.
- At least 15 years of professional experience, including 5 or more years in a leadership position, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization with multiple programs and complex operations.
- Proven background in nonprofit leadership, including fundraising, financial oversight, team development, board governance, and community engagement.
- Track record of securing support from individual donors and institutional funders.
- Comfort and confidence as a visible, front-line fundraiser with strong relationship-building skills.
- Experience with earned-revenue strategies is an advantage.
- Ability to think strategically while also translating vision into practical priorities and plans.
- Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and a collaborative leadership style.
- Ability to manage competing needs with tact, transparency, and sound judgment.
- Financial fluency, including comfort with budgets, financial reporting, and fiscally responsible decision-making.
- Experience hiring, mentoring, and managing staff across multiple functions while building healthy team culture.
- Willingness to be hands-on, present, and active in a seasonal environment, including during busy periods.
- Interest in agriculture, food systems, environmental work, or outdoor-based mission work is helpful.
Compensation
This is a salaried leadership role with compensation above $100,000 annually.
