Job description

Overview

GMC Utilities Group is hiring an experienced Gas Mainlayer to work on infrastructure projects across Waterford, Tipperary, and Wexford. This role suits someone who enjoys hands-on field work, working as part of a close team, and contributing to a company focused on safety, quality, and ongoing development.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out excavation activities required for gas works.
  • Install services and mains in line with the OPM, including pipework up to 400 mm.
  • Perform non-routine operations and operate under approved NRO procedures.
  • Maintain a safe work environment for yourself, your team, and anyone entering the work area.
  • Plan and manage daily workload effectively.
  • Record job progress and updates using a handheld device.
  • Take part in on-call duties, both during and outside normal working hours.
  • Follow GMC policies, procedures, and work processes at all times.
  • Remain mindful of cost control and efficient use of resources.
  • Set up and maintain a safe, professional site throughout the workday.
  • Work toward targets set by your manager and stay aligned with relevant KPIs.
  • Accept that work locations are assigned at management discretion.
  • Comply with GNI, GMC, and external audit requirements and procedures.
  • Complete weekly inspection records for plant and vehicles.

Requirements

  • GDF2 qualification or an equivalent certification, along with successful completion of all GNI assessments.
  • Valid ticket for locating underground services.
  • Current 3-day SLG ticket with authority to set up a traffic management plan.
  • Full clean driving licence; EC1 is an advantage.
  • Strong ability to identify hazards and complete site-specific risk assessments each day.
  • Solid understanding of the GNI Operational Procedures Manual.
  • At least 3 years of experience in gas mainlaying, utility mainlaying, or a similar civil utilities role.
  • Completion of excavation and shoring training.
  • Completion of the GNI leak management course.
  • Good communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Willingness to work on an on-call rota.
