Role overview
This position is focused on carrying out efficient, high-quality maintenance and general repair work that supports the organisation’s building needs. The person in this role will be expected to complete maintenance tasks while following the company’s health and safety standards.
Key responsibilities
The handyman will handle minor repairs and general maintenance across the premises, including fixtures, fittings, building areas and surrounding spaces. The role also includes planned preventive maintenance, routine inspections and support for both proactive and reactive maintenance needs.
Day-to-day duties may involve basic plumbing tasks such as clearing blocked drains and sinks, minor electrical repairs and maintenance of on-site electrical equipment, as well as other small repair jobs as needed. The successful candidate must be able to work independently, think ahead, solve problems, manage conflicting demands and still work well as part of a team.
Additional duties include completing checklist-based inspections for buildings, utilities, fire equipment, plant and mechanical equipment; meeting preventative maintenance deadlines; carrying out assigned tasks on time; and reporting progress to the manager every day.
This role also requires managing the maintenance store, maintaining accurate records of tools, materials and consumables, and completing monthly stock counts and reports. The handyman will also support maintenance technicians, guide junior team members on technical skills and safety practices, and supervise subcontractors to ensure work meets company quality standards.
Tools, standards and working style
The role requires confident use of general hand tools, power tools, ladders and generators. The incumbent must be physically fit enough to perform the work, able to maintain safety compliance at all times, and prepared to handle overtime, standby duties and weekend call-outs when needed.
Requirements
A Matric / Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent technical qualification is required. Previous experience in hospitality industry maintenance will be an added advantage. The candidate should be computer literate, especially in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook, and must be highly organised with strong communication skills.
Practical knowledge of plumbing, painting, electrical work, tiling and paving is important. The role also calls for someone who can work independently, plan ahead, follow SOPs, meet deadlines and maintain quality workmanship. Experience in handyman or maintenance work for 3 years is preferred.
