Role Overview
As a Janitor in Vernon, British Columbia, you will help keep The Salvation Army’s corps and facilities clean, safe, and sanitary. The position covers routine custodial duties, light maintenance, outdoor upkeep, and support for health and safety practices across the property.
Key Duties
- Carry out general cleaning tasks such as dusting furniture, walls, fixtures, and equipment, as well as washing and waxing floors and cleaning shared kitchens and washrooms.
- Use cleaning machinery and tools, including steam cleaners and floor polishers.
- Collect garbage and recycling and dispose of them in line with sanitation and site standards.
- Maintain the premises through weekly cleaning routines, including emptying bins, taking garbage out on schedule, and returning recycling and compost containers after collection.
- Vacuum carpets, sweep tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards, and clean glass surfaces, ledges, offices, and furnishings.
- Clean and arrange furniture, wipe tables, chairs, and door handles, and dust or move items as needed.
- Keep kitchen and washroom areas clean and stocked where applicable, including sinks, toilets, counters, mirrors, fixtures, hand sanitizers, and related supplies.
- Report repair needs to a supervisor when outside service support may be required.
- Check doors and windows to support building security.
- Complete minor repairs such as changing light bulbs, clearing blocked toilets, addressing flushing issues, touching up paint, and tightening loose furniture components.
- Carry out spot washing, floor stripping and waxing, carpet shampooing, and related cleaning tasks as needed.
- Maintain outdoor areas by clearing snow and ice, salting walkways, removing litter, and keeping the storage shed tidy; also perform lawn care when required.
- Monitor cleaning chemical containers and ensure all mixed solutions are labeled in accordance with WHMIS requirements.
- Help keep food bank areas clean and safe by following public health and safety expectations.
- Support the safety of staff, volunteers, donors, clients, and visitors by keeping exits clear, handling spills promptly, and removing hazards inside and outside the building.
- Use required protective clothing and safety equipment as directed.
- Report hazards, incidents, injuries, illnesses, and equipment or property concerns immediately.
- Follow the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, along with Salvation Army health and safety policies and procedures.
- Complete other related tasks as assigned.
Working Conditions
This role is usually based at the facility in generally agreeable conditions, though some outdoor groundskeeping work is required. The job involves industrial cleaning tools and equipment, mopping, sweeping, bending, twisting, reaching, lifting, occasional ladder work, and fine motor tasks. It also requires careful handling of hazardous chemicals and non-motorized cleaning equipment. The ability to lift or move up to 49 pounds is required.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
You should be willing to learn about and support The Salvation Army’s mission and purpose, especially as it relates to the responsibilities of this role. A combination of education and experience may also be accepted.
Education and Certification
Completion of secondary school is required, although equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Knowledge
Up to 1 year of related experience is preferred, including custodial work, practical life skills, and general knowledge of cleaning and maintenance methods and equipment. Familiarity with health and safety standards is also needed.

You should present yourself professionally and interact well with others. The position calls for the ability to work on your own as well as contribute positively in a team setting. Reliability, self-motivation, integrity, confidentiality, organization, time management, attention to detail, problem-solving, active listening, and strong interpersonal skills are important. You must also follow all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and applicable legislation, and be willing to complete required screening and background checks, including providing an original background check report.
Compensation
The expected pay range for this role is $18.25 to $21.04 per hour, with a maximum rate of $23.82 per hour. Final placement within the range will depend on market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate’s experience, skills, and qualifications.
