Job description
About PRI Engineering
PRI is a consulting firm specializing in engineering, environment, and natural resources, dedicated to providing high-quality services. Our integrated team of engineers, environmental scientists, and resource professionals offers a unique synergy of services within the industry, underpinned by our core values: commitment to our people, relationships, community, and the environment.
The Opportunity
PRI is expanding its Environmental Group and is seeking a Junior Biologist to join our team. This entry-level position, based in Kelowna or Surrey, BC, is ideal for a recent graduate eager to gain experience in terrestrial and wildlife ecology within a dynamic consulting setting. The role involves a blend of fieldwork and office tasks, with occasional travel, and offers the chance to learn from senior biologists and environmental scientists on diverse projects across sectors like forestry, renewable energy, municipal development, transportation, and mining.
Responsibilities
- Assist senior staff with field studies focusing on terrestrial ecosystems and wildlife, including surveys for at-risk species, habitat evaluations, and biodiversity monitoring.
- Meticulously collect, record, and organize field data, ensuring accuracy through detailed field logs, daily reports, and chain of custody documentation.
- Support the analysis and interpretation of ecological data under the guidance of senior biologists.
- Aid in the preparation of technical reports, letters, and memoranda, ensuring compliance with provincial and federal environmental legislation.
- Conduct literature reviews, analyze historical aerial photography, perform terrain mapping, and undertake desktop research tasks.
- Provide support for permitting processes and environmental assessment activities as assigned.
- Collaborate effectively with project team members to contribute to multi-disciplinary project deliverables.
- Participate in required corporate operational and administrative duties in a timely manner.
- Adhere to and actively promote the company's Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) policies at all times.
- Complete necessary safety documentation, including tailgate meetings and hazard assessments.
Qualifications
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field, obtained within the last two years.
- Be eligible for registration as a Biologist-in-Training (B.I.T.) or as a College Member with the BC College of Applied Biologists (BCCAB); the company will provide support for this registration process, and it is not a prerequisite for application.
- Possess a genuine interest in terrestrial ecology and a strong desire to learn in a field-based environment; prior consulting experience is not required.
- Hold a valid BC Class 5 driver's licence (or equivalent) and have access to a personal vehicle.
- Demonstrate the physical capability to conduct fieldwork in various terrains and weather conditions throughout the year.
- Exhibit a high level of attention to detail and a commitment to precise field data collection and documentation.
- Be capable of taking direction, working effectively within a team, and proactively asking questions.
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills, with foundational technical writing abilities.
- Be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
- Be willing to travel for fieldwork, which may include overnight stays in remote locations.
- Maintain a safety-conscious attitude in all work activities.
Assets (Not Required)
- Familiarity with ArcGIS, GPS data collection techniques, or various wildlife survey methodologies, gained through academic studies, co-op placements, or volunteer work.
- Experience with BC species-at-risk, the Riparian Areas Regulation, or Environmental Assessment Office processes.
- Possession of First Aid certification (OFA Level 1 or higher); training can be provided.
- Certification in WHMIS 2015 and foundational field safety training.
