Job description

Role overview

A growing technology company in the energy and utilities space is hiring a Junior Data Analyst to help transform sensor data from rugged monitoring systems into practical insights. The organization designs and deploys field-ready systems for high-voltage electrical infrastructure, using grid signals to spot early warning signs, improve reliability, cut outages, and lower wildfire risk. This is a hands-on position based in Kelowna, British Columbia, with a hybrid setup and some remote flexibility.

The team is small, fast-moving, and working closely with utility partners in live deployments. In this role, you will support analytics, machine learning, reporting, and product improvement by organizing and interpreting data from both lab and field environments.

Key responsibilities

  • Examine field and laboratory data collected from sensor systems installed on high-voltage assets.
  • Assist with data science tasks such as model building, testing, and results reporting.
  • Create dashboards and visual displays that make system performance understandable for internal teams and utility clients.
  • Clean, structure, annotate, and prepare datasets for analysis and machine learning use.
  • Convert analytical findings into concise reports, dashboards, and client-ready insights.
  • Partner with engineers and data scientists to interpret signal quality, field behavior, and infrastructure conditions.
  • Use Git and common development practices to work effectively with the technical team.
  • Help improve software and data tools used for pilots, deployments, and product development.
  • Support model development with tools such as PyTorch Lightning.
  • Occasionally travel for field deployments, utility meetings, team planning, and project-related work.
  • Work across teams to understand different utility environments, customer requirements, and deployment settings.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in data analysis, data science, software, or a closely related technical role.
  • Hands-on exposure to data science workflows, including data preparation, analysis, and model training.
  • Some background in software development.
  • Practical experience using Git.
  • Familiarity with PyTorch Lightning or a similar machine learning framework.
  • Programming ability in one or more of Python, C++, Java, or PHP.
  • Comfort working in cross-functional teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical findings clearly.
  • Willingness and capability to travel from time to time.
  • Comfort in a startup environment where priorities may change quickly.
  • Experience in utilities, energy systems, asset management, or industrial infrastructure is considered an advantage.
  • Exposure to sensor data, IoT solutions, or field-deployed hardware would be beneficial.
  • Experience designing dashboards for technical or operational users would help you stand out.
  • Prior contribution to production-quality code is a plus.

Perks and benefits

  • 5 weeks of vacation each year, along with a mandatory paid Christmas shutdown, which is more generous than the usual junior-level offer.
  • A remote-friendly setup with travel expenses covered for quarterly meetings, planning sessions, and field work.
  • Work with measurable impact: the models and dashboards you build will support live high-voltage infrastructure and help reduce outages and wildfire ignition risk in real communities.
  • Your work will directly influence how utilities monitor and protect critical assets, and you will see the outcome in real-world deployments rather than only in presentations.

Additional information

This role is part of a company focused on practical technology for the energy and utilities sector. The team collaborates with utility partners and values hands-on problem solving, clear communication, and a willingness to learn in a rapidly evolving environment.

Hiring process

Applications are reviewed by the team after you submit your resume and cover letter through the company portal. If your background aligns, you may be invited to a 30–45 minute vetting conversation to discuss your experience, projects, and impact. After that, the team prepares an unbiased profile centered on your skills and accomplishments before sharing it with clients and supporting you through the remainder of the interview process.
