Role Overview
FlySafair is hiring a Junior First Officer to support safe, efficient, and compliant flight operations from Johannesburg, Gauteng. The role involves active participation in flight preparation, in-flight monitoring, crew coordination, and post-flight administration, while maintaining strong customer service and professional standards.
Key Duties
- Support the safe and timely operation of each flight.
- Track the aircraft’s route, instruments, and system status throughout the journey.
- Complete required checks and procedures before departure, during the flight, and after landing.
- Communicate with internal teams, outside service providers, and passengers when needed.
- Assist with flying and managing the aircraft in the air.
- Follow aviation regulations, company rules, and operating procedures at all times.
- Contribute to the airline’s service standards by protecting a strong customer experience.
- Prepare and submit accurate operational and administrative records.
- Spot potential safety risks and work with the Captain and Operations team to resolve them.
- Take command if the Captain becomes incapacitated.
Operational Expectations
- Stay current on SACAA and international aviation regulations, as well as the company Operations Manuals.
- Keep up to date with the manual provisions needed to carry out the role effectively.
- Assist the Captain with operational and administrative flight duties as requested.
- Help maintain high standards of crew discipline, conduct, and appearance.
- Carry out flight duties in line with FlySafair Standard Operating Procedures, including aircraft-specific procedures, limitations, and performance requirements.
- Maintain an independent and continuous cross-check of the aircraft’s position and terrain clearance.
- Offer input, information, and assistance that supports safe and efficient flight operations.
- Remain fully aware of the route, briefing material, weather forecast, and runway conditions at destination and alternate airports.
- Complete all checks and documentation required by the Operations Manual.
- Work with the Captain to review fuel, alternates, and any routing or operational restrictions before departure.
- Carry out or monitor normal, abnormal, and emergency checklists as set out in the Operations Manual, FCOM, and FCTM.
- Keep a close watch on flight instruments and immediately alert the Captain to route deviations, hazardous conditions, or abnormal readings and warnings.
- Handle radio communications as required.
- Complete all post-flight actions in accordance with the OM and FCOM.
- Submit all necessary reports and documentation, including IQSMS entries.
Requirements
Applicants must meet the following mandatory and preferred criteria:
- Matric / Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification.
- Valid SACAA Commercial licence.
- Current SACAA Class 1 Medical.
- SACAA ATPL is preferred.
- Boeing type rating is an advantage.
- At least 1,000 total flying hours, with one of the following qualifying combinations:
- 500 hours on twin-turbine P1/2 aircraft below 10,000 kg, or
- Boeing/Airbus type rating including Level D simulator time, or
- 250 hours on jet/turbine aircraft above 10,000 kg.
- Willingness to sign the required training bond.
- No criminal record.
- Own transport and a valid South African driver’s licence.
- South African citizenship with proof of identity.
- Valid South African passport.
- Availability to work irregular hours on a rostered schedule.
- Strong working knowledge of SACAA, ICAO, and related national aviation regulations.
- Knowledge of Doc 8168.
- Understanding of Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot licensing content.
- Language proficiency at Level 6.
