Job description

Role overview

J D Wetherspoon is hiring kitchen staff for its Yr Hen Dderwen pub in Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. This is a full-time, on-site role with a pay rate of £12.91 per hour and a closing date of 20-06-2026. The position is designed for people who bring energy, enthusiasm and a positive approach to work.

Who this role suits

No prior kitchen experience is required. The employer is mainly looking for candidates with a strong work ethic, a calm approach under pressure, and a willingness to learn. This opportunity may suit someone seeking a long-term path or someone wanting additional shifts, provided they are dependable, friendly and comfortable working within a team.

What the job involves

You will work with the kitchen team to prepare and cook food, keep service running efficiently and maintain high standards across cleanliness, safety and customer care. The pub operates from early morning through late night, so the role offers flexibility across mornings, evenings, weekends and late finishes.

Key duties

  • Prepare, cook and plate dishes to the required standards.
  • Use kitchen equipment such as grills, fryers, microwaves and similar stations.
  • Coordinate with the team to meet timing and quality expectations.
  • Follow food safety, hygiene, allergen and health-and-safety procedures.
  • Keep the kitchen tidy throughout service, including full end-of-shift cleaning.
  • Manage stock rotation and store food safely.
  • Complete induction, role-specific and refresher training, while contributing to ongoing improvement.

Development and progression

The company notes that many of its team leaders and managers began their careers in the kitchen or behind the bar. Training and progression opportunities may include structured on-the-job learning, apprenticeships, management academies, cross-training in bar, floor and hotel areas, and routes into team-leader, kitchen-shift-leader or pub-manager positions.

Working pattern

This role is listed at 8 hours per week, with flexible availability across Monday through Sunday.

Additional information

Wetherspoon describes itself as an inclusive employer where people from all backgrounds are welcome. The company aims to ensure employees feel comfortable being themselves at work and receive the skills and knowledge needed for a career there. It also notes that under-18s may be paid at a lower rate, in line with national guidelines and usually above them. If application numbers are high, the vacancy may close earlier than planned.

Compensation and benefits

The pay includes a competitive hourly wage and a range of workplace benefits. A free meal and drink are provided while working. When off duty, employees receive 20% off food, drinks and hotel accommodation for themselves and up to three guests. Night hours worked between midnight and 5:59am attract an additional £1 per hour. The role also includes a bonus scheme that can reach up to 19% of pay, paid holiday, access to free shares after a qualifying period, and a loyalty reward scheme.
