Job description

Role overview

At HMP Full Sutton, the Operational Support Grade plays an important part in the smooth, safe daily running of the prison. This is a busy and active position with a mix of desk-based work and practical duties, carried out as part of a cooperative team.

What the job involves

Your day-to-day work may include gate security and searches, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The role also involves physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles.

Working pattern and travel

This position includes a range of shifts, such as weekends and nights. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to work punctually every day. The prison may be in a rural area with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although this is not mandatory unless stated otherwise.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. This role may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed under pressure, uses common sense and good judgement, and works effectively as part of a team.

Career development

This role offers a chance to gain strong insight into how a prison operates, while also opening the door to future progression into other prison roles. It may also support a move into the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

Training and benefits

You will receive training along with opportunities for growth and development. In addition to base pay, the package includes annual leave, paid holidays, apprenticeship access, pension provision, and a range of employee support and discount schemes.

Pay

Salary for this role is £29,432 per year.

Terms and additional information

Contact with prisoners is usually limited, although there may be occasional interaction depending on the establishment. The role is part of His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service.

Benefits and allowances

  • 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
  • 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
  • Eligibility for the Civil Service pension scheme
  • Season ticket loans
  • Retail discounts
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Cycle to Work scheme
