About the role

Join the conservation team in Twizel and help protect important heritage places while improving visitor experiences across the Mackenzie/Waitaki Basin and Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park.

This is a full-time fixed-term position for 1 year, based in Twizel.

The pay range for this role is $61,189 to $67,446. The starting rate will depend on the skills and experience you bring.

What you will be doing

  • Looking after campsites, picnic areas, car parks, toilets, and water supply systems.
  • Carrying out upkeep on backcountry huts, bridges, and other structures.
  • Handling office-based work such as data entry, planning, and arranging field trips.
  • Providing support to broader teams when needed.

Work pattern and field conditions

This role follows a rotating 7-day roster, with five rostered days each week. You will also need to undertake overnight trips of up to a week in remote backcountry areas, often travelling by helicopter, boat, or on foot.

If you are appointed, you will be encouraged to volunteer with FENZ or St John services as a responder.

Skills and experience we are looking for

We would like to hear from candidates who can offer some of the following:

  • A full New Zealand driver licence.
  • Good physical fitness and experience in backcountry environments.
  • A strong commitment to health and safety.
  • Confidence with technology and the ability to pick up new systems quickly.
  • Clear communication and strong teamwork abilities.
  • Practical problem-solving skills.

It would be an advantage if you also have:

  • Carpentry or construction experience.
  • Experience maintaining visitor facilities, tracks, and built structures.
  • Experience or qualifications using chainsaws, scrub bars, 4WD vehicles, LUVs, and helicopters.
  • A current first aid certificate.
