Job description
About the Role
Bank of New Zealand is looking for an experienced Senior Technical Specialist to join its Cloud Platforms team in Wellington or Auckland. This role sits within a fast-moving, collaborative environment where the focus is on building innovative solutions using cloud, virtualisation, containerisation, and automation technologies. The position is hybrid, with three days each week in the office.
The work involves helping design, build, and implement technology and infrastructure solutions that support both business needs and customer outcomes. You will play an important part in a major migration from on-premises infrastructure to AWS New Zealand, with an emphasis on making the transition smooth, dependable, and repeatable.
What You'll Do
- Lead the delivery of complex technical work, features, and systems while balancing delivery speed, quality, and alignment with strategic priorities.
- Participate in on-call coverage and production support for your domain, contributing to reliability and incident response.
- Design and build resilient, scalable systems using advanced engineering practices.
- Make technical decisions that support long-term maintainability and operational performance.
- Work through ambiguity, define problems clearly, and recommend practical solutions.
- Support and guide others in problem solving and system design.
- Build strong partnerships across teams and influence technical direction through clear communication and structured thinking.
- Help improve how engineers across the bank build, deploy, and operate cloud services.
- Mentor team members and contribute to uplift in capability across the wider engineering community.
Key Projects
The immediate focus is BNZ’s migration from on-premises infrastructure to AWS New Zealand. You will contribute to making that transition reliable, efficient, and consistent for customers and internal teams.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role comes from being curious about emerging technologies, working well as part of a team, and sharing knowledge freely. A strong candidate will be able to identify performance issues, resolve them effectively, and continuously improve systems and processes based on what is learned.
Technical Background
Useful experience for this role includes enterprise work with AWS and Azure, infrastructure automation, and cloud or on-premises platform engineering. A strong understanding of security, networking, and platform operations will be valuable, as will experience working in agile delivery environments.
Additional Information
BNZ offers wellbeing support, flexible working, generous leave, and opportunities for learning, growth, and career development. The team operates in an agile environment where no two days are the same. The role is based in Auckland or Wellington. Applications may be reviewed throughout the advertising period, and the bank reserves the right to close the process early. Closing date: 05 July 2026.
