Job description

About the Company

Cubic is a global technology business focused on transportation solutions that improve everyday travel and defence solutions that support mission success and the safety of service members. Its teams work across the world to deliver innovation and service through a portfolio that includes Cubic Transportation Systems and Cubic Defense.

Role Overview

This position is responsible for building prototype and small-batch printed circuit board assemblies, as well as assembling production units on the manufacturing line, so delivery targets for engineering development and customer orders are met accurately and on time. The role also covers preventative and corrective equipment maintenance, including board-level repair. It is generally performed with broad guidance, and the person in the role is expected to make meaningful independent decisions as part of day-to-day work.

Key Duties

You will assemble prototype PCB builds for R&D work and limited-run boards for production needs. You will also build products according to the relevant text procedures, ensuring all output meets required quality standards and stays within or improves upon target production and repair times.

The role includes carrying out preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment, diagnosing faults on site, troubleshooting issues, and repairing or replacing modular parts. You will need to read and work from complex schematics, wiring and parts diagrams, work orders, customer specifications, test procedures, and engineer notes to identify the correct tests and equipment. You will also set up subassemblies, evaluate their performance, and interpret test data to confirm whether results meet specification.

Diagnostics may involve using counters, signal generators, tracking generators, synthesizers, network analysers, spectrum analysers, digital interface units, general hand tools, and specialist tooling. You will support the team leader by quickly flagging production issues that may be causing defects and by suggesting practical fixes. Continuous improvement, 5S discipline across operating areas, and support for calibration records and QA activities are also part of the job.

Additional Responsibilities and Compliance

You will be expected to work in line with the company’s quality management system, occupational health, safety and environment requirements, and security procedures. You must also follow human resources processes and complete any other duties as needed.

Requirements

The ideal applicant will have an NCEA or similar qualification in electronics engineering, computer science, information systems, or another relevant technical discipline. You should bring 3 to 4 years of assembly experience, enough to meet or improve allocated production assembly times.

Hands-on capability is required for following text procedures and engineering drawings, soldering to IPC-A-610 Rev D Class 2 standards, wiring to IPC WHMA A 620 Rev A Class 2 standards, and performing light mechanical assembly work. Basic computer skills are also needed to support product testing through automated test equipment.

You must be able to pass a National Police Check. The role may involve occasional travel to suppliers in New Zealand or to overseas customer sites, so strong spoken and written English is essential.

Competencies

The company expects the successful candidate to align with broader organisational priorities, act with integrity and respect, communicate clearly, manage work effectively to meet deadlines, focus on customer needs, pursue innovation, and take ownership of outcomes and commitments.

Equal Opportunity

The employer welcomes applications from people of all backgrounds and does not discriminate on the basis of any protected characteristic under applicable law.
