Role Overview
OptiTrack is hiring a Technical Writer to join its Engineering team in Corvallis, Oregon. In this role, you will act as the communication link between complex engineering work and the people who rely on the product. The position focuses on turning sophisticated technical processes into clear, practical, and polished documentation that helps users understand and use the system effectively.
Job Summary
This position is responsible for developing, updating, and refining documentation for OptiTrack products as well as internal processes. You will work alongside engineering, support, QA, product management, and marketing to produce accurate and user-friendly content that supports customers, internal teams, and continuous improvement.
Key Duties
- Own the documentation function for OptiTrack products and serve as the main technical writing resource.
- Develop and improve external documentation such as user manuals, knowledge base content, release notes, installation instructions, troubleshooting guides, SDK/API material, and developer-facing documentation.
- Build and maintain internal documentation for support workflows, engineering procedures, training resources, and organizational knowledge.
- Partner with engineering and support teams to capture and document new products, features, workflows, and best practices.
- Collect input from subject matter experts and convert complex technical ideas into concise, easy-to-follow documentation.
- Structure and manage documentation systems and workflows using tools like GitBook, Confluence, and Jira.
- Review existing materials and refresh them for correctness, consistency, and alignment with product updates.
- Make sure documentation follows internal security expectations and data privacy requirements.
- Help shape documentation standards, style guidelines, and knowledge management processes.
- Produce visual aids such as screenshots, diagrams, tutorials, and instructional videos when useful.
- Be open to occasional travel as needed.
Requirements
- At least 4 years of experience in technical writing or a closely related field.
- Excellent writing ability with a strong focus on precision and detail.
- Background in documenting software, hardware, or similarly complex technical products.
- Comfort working directly with engineers and other technical experts.
- Hands-on experience with documentation and collaboration platforms such as GitBook, Confluence, and Jira.
- Working knowledge of Git and other version control or collaborative documentation tools.
- Ability to juggle multiple assignments and priorities in a fast-moving environment.
- Preferred exposure to OptiTrack products and motion capture workflows.
- Prior experience in motion capture, animation, virtual production, robotics, biomechanics, or related industries is a plus.
- Familiarity with 3D tools such as Maya, MotionBuilder, Blender, Unreal Engine, or Unity is preferred.
- Experience creating video tutorials, training materials, or similar multimedia documentation is desirable.
- Video editing and content creation experience with tools like Adobe Premiere Pro, Camtasia, or After Effects is an advantage.
Physical Requirements
This role is based in a professional office setting. It requires the ability to stay seated for long periods while using standard office equipment, along with repeated use of the wrists, hands, and fingers for typing. You should also be able to visually inspect detailed technical diagrams and software code.
