Role overview
The Traffic Control Flagger is responsible for directing vehicle movement around construction zones, road maintenance areas, and other active work sites. The position includes installing and removing traffic control signs, cones, and barricades, and using hand signals, paddles, signs, and other devices to keep workers and the public safe. The work requires strong attention to detail, comfort working outdoors in changing weather, and the ability to remain standing for long periods.
Key duties
- Place signs, cones, and related traffic control equipment around work zones to redirect traffic safely.
- Use stop/slow paddles to manage traffic movement effectively.
- Stay in contact with coworkers through two-way radios to support safe operations.
- Stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms for periods of up to 10 hours per day.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and move items weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic control materials to and from job locations.
- Complete routine vehicle checks and basic maintenance inspections.
- Work in outdoor environments that may include moving machinery, live traffic, fumes, airborne particles, and weather exposure.
- Work in conditions where the noise level is typically moderate to loud.
- Follow all company policies and procedures.
- Take on additional duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Candidate must pass a background review, including a motor vehicle records check.
- Must pass a drug screening and meet federal DOT requirements.
- Must be willing to use required safety gear, including work boots with safety toes, hard hat, safety glasses, and a safety vest.
- Ability to operate a two-way radio.
- Comfort working in varied weather conditions and active traffic environments.
- Strong communication skills for working with contractors and internal teams while delivering high customer service.
- Ability to work effectively in a team setting.
- Reliable attendance, dependable transportation, and a strong work ethic are essential.
- Completion of ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training is required.
- Must be open to statewide travel, including occasional overnight stays.
- Availability for night shifts, weekend work, and project-based scheduling is required.
- Must be willing to participate in a rotating on-call schedule.
