Role overview

The Traffic Control Flagger is responsible for managing vehicle movement around road construction, maintenance, and other active work zones. The job includes placing and removing traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barricades, and using hand signals, stop/slow paddles, radios, and other tools to direct motorists safely. This position calls for strong concentration, the ability to work outdoors in changing weather, and comfort with standing for long periods.

Key duties

  • Position traffic signs, cones, and similar devices to route vehicles safely around the work area.
  • Direct traffic using stop/slow paddles and related control methods.
  • Stay in contact with coworkers through two-way radios and other communication tools.
  • Be prepared to stand, walk, and reach for as long as 10 hours per day.
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, and move items weighing more than 50 pounds when needed.
  • Operate company vehicles to move traffic control equipment to and from job sites.
  • Complete routine vehicle checks and basic maintenance inspections.
  • Work in outdoor environments that may include weather exposure, moving machinery, active traffic, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Handle work in environments where noise is usually moderate to loud.
  • Follow company policies and procedures at all times.
  • Take on additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Applicants must clear a background review, including a motor vehicle records check.
  • The role requires passing a drug screening and meeting federal DOT standards.
  • Proper safety gear must be worn, including safety-toe boots, a hard hat, safety glasses, and a safety vest.
  • Ability to use a two-way radio effectively.
  • Comfort working in different weather conditions and active traffic environments.
  • Strong communication skills for coordinating with contractors and internal teams while maintaining high customer service standards.
  • Ability to work cooperatively within a team.
  • Consistent attendance, dependable transportation, and a strong work ethic are essential.
  • Completion of the ATSSA Flagger training course and company-provided Defensive Driver training is required.
  • Willingness to travel statewide, including occasional overnight stays.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and a rotating on-call schedule as project needs require.
