Position Overview
The Traffic Control Flagger is responsible for managing vehicle movement near construction zones, road maintenance sites, and other active work areas. The role includes placing and removing cones, signs, and barricades to help protect workers and the public. The flagger communicates with motorists using hand signals, signs, stop/slow paddles, and other traffic control tools to move traffic safely through or around the site.
Key Duties
- Install traffic control signs, cones, and related equipment around work zones to redirect vehicles.
- Direct traffic using stop/slow paddles and other approved methods.
- Stay in contact with crew members through two-way radios.
- Remain on your feet and move around as needed for as long as 10 hours per day.
- Handle, lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic control equipment to and from job locations.
- Complete routine checks and basic maintenance inspections on vehicles.
- Work in outdoor environments and around traffic, machinery, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Accept that the work environment may be moderate to loud.
- Follow company policies and procedures at all times.
- Take on additional tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license is required.
- Must clear a background review, including motor vehicle record verification.
- Must pass a drug screening and satisfy federal DOT requirements.
- Must be able to wear required protective gear, including steel-toe work boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and safety vest.
- Ability to use a two-way radio.
- Comfortable working in changing weather and active traffic conditions.
- Strong verbal communication skills when working with contractors and internal teams, along with a customer-focused approach.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.
- Consistent attendance, dependable transportation, and a strong work ethic are necessary.
- Completion of ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training is required.
- Willingness to travel within the state, including occasional overnight travel, and to work nights and weekends based on project needs.
- Must be available for a rotating on-call schedule.
