Role summary
The flagger supports safe traffic movement around construction zones, road maintenance areas, and other active work sites. The job includes placing and removing traffic control signs, cones, and barricades, and using hand signals, signs, and related equipment to guide motorists safely through or around the work zone. The work is outdoors, requires close attention to detail, and involves standing for long periods.
Key duties
- Install and remove traffic control signs, cones, and other devices to redirect vehicles around work areas.
- Direct traffic using stop/slow paddles and other approved traffic control methods.
- Keep in regular contact with crew members through two-way radios.
- Remain standing, walking, and reaching with the arms for up to 10 hours per day.
- Handle items weighing more than 50 pounds, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and moving.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic control equipment to and from job locations.
- Complete routine vehicle checks and basic maintenance inspections.
- Work in outdoor conditions and around moving equipment, traffic, fumes, airborne particles, and machinery parts.
- Work in an environment that is typically moderate to loud.
- Follow company policies and procedures at all times.
- Take on other duties as assigned.
Required qualifications and conditions
Applicants must hold a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a background screening, including a motor vehicle record check. A drug test is required, along with compliance with federal DOT standards. The role requires wearing approved safety gear, including work boots with a safety toe, hard hat, safety glasses, and a safety vest. Candidates should be comfortable operating a two-way radio, working in varying weather and traffic conditions, and communicating effectively with contractors and internal teams while maintaining strong customer service. Teamwork, excellent attendance, dependable transportation, and a strong work ethic are essential. Candidates must complete ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training. The job also requires statewide travel, occasional overnight stays, night and weekend availability as project needs dictate, and participation in a rotating on-call schedule.
