Job description

About the organisation

Age UK North Tyneside is an established local charity that has supported older people, their families, and carers since 1972. Over the years, it has grown into one of the borough’s leading voluntary sector providers, employing more than 350 staff and engaging over 20 volunteers. Its services range from free information and advice to specialist dementia support, fitness activities, social groups, befriending, veteran support, tailored help for older LGBTQ+ people, and practical assistance at home. The organisation is deeply connected to the North Tyneside community and is focused on person-centred support that helps people stay independent, feel well, and remain connected to others.

Role overview

This is a full-time, on-site role in Wallsend for a Wellbeing Centre Manager who will be responsible for the effective daily running of a busy centre for older people. The postholder will lead staff and volunteers, coordinate activities and wellbeing programmes, and help ensure the centre remains a safe, inclusive, and welcoming place for everyone who uses it.

Key duties

The manager will oversee centre operations, including rotas, room use, health and safety, safeguarding, and adherence to internal policies and procedures. They will work with colleagues and external partners to develop and promote services, review attendance and feedback, and look for ways to strengthen the centre’s reach and effectiveness. The role also includes supporting budget and resource planning, keeping accurate documentation and reports, and serving as a main contact for families, carers, and other stakeholders.

Experience and professional background

Applicants should have experience managing a service or centre, ideally within health, social care, community, or charity environments, and be comfortable balancing several priorities at once. The position calls for strong people-management capability, including the ability to lead, guide, and develop staff and volunteers while encouraging a positive and collaborative workplace culture.

Skills and working style

Excellent communication and relationship-building skills are essential, along with the ability to interact confidently and respectfully with older people, families, carers, and partner organisations. Strong administration and organisation are also needed, including scheduling, record keeping, report writing, and effective use of IT systems and software. The successful candidate will take a proactive approach, solve problems effectively, and use initiative while working as part of a wider multidisciplinary team.

Safeguarding and service knowledge

Understanding of safeguarding, health and safety, and risk management in a community or care setting is important, together with a commitment to promoting dignity and independence. Experience in planning and coordinating wellbeing, social, or activity-based programmes for older adults is highly relevant. Knowledge of issues commonly affecting older people, such as loneliness, long-term conditions, and dementia, is important, and dementia-friendly experience would be a strong advantage.

Additional information

This role is focused on delivering practical, inclusive support for older people in a community setting. The organisation values respectful, person-centred practice and teamwork, and the postholder will play an important part in helping the centre remain responsive to local needs.
