Role Overview
As a Lead Data Scientist in the AI Technical Solutions team, you will own the design and delivery of production-ready AI solutions for clients. The role blends deep AI/ML expertise with people leadership, requiring you to guide a team of data scientists while turning emerging AI capabilities into high-impact, usable solutions.
You will set technical direction for solution delivery, define development standards for production environments, and contribute to commercial activities such as scoping work, preparing proposals, and presenting to clients. In this position, you will balance innovation with practicality, promote engineering quality, and help develop the next generation of data science talent at Quantium.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture and technical design of advanced GenAI solutions, choosing appropriately between classical machine learning, LLMs, agents, workflows, and retrieval-augmented generation.
- Define technical standards and evaluation methods for building AI systems that are ready for production use.
- Manage, coach, and support a team of data scientists, encouraging curiosity, experimentation, continuous learning, and strong knowledge sharing.
- Strengthen team capability through mentoring, code reviews, and career development support.
- Oversee delivery from initial design through to deployment, ensuring solutions are reliable, high quality, and suitable for operational use.
- Balance technical ambition with commercial practicality throughout solution delivery.
- Support business development through technical scoping, effort estimation, proposal preparation, and client-facing presentations.
- Explain complex AI ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Contribute to the broader strategy of the AI Solutions team.
- Identify opportunities to create reusable components, accelerators, and efficiencies.
- Stay engaged with developments in the wider AI ecosystem.
Requirements
- More than 7 years of experience in data science, AI/ML solution delivery, or technical consulting.
- Proven success leading teams that deliver production-grade AI or machine learning solutions.
- Hands-on experience building GenAI applications using frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, or similar tools.
- Strong understanding of transformer models, embeddings, and modern AI development approaches.
- Advanced Python skills with familiarity in testing, CI/CD, and code quality practices.
- Experience working with cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
- Knowledge of containerisation and modern software delivery practices.
- Experience managing and developing data scientists or similar technical professionals.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical teams and business stakeholders.
- Experience with effort estimation, solution scoping, and commercial awareness in technical decision-making.
- Tertiary qualification in engineering, mathematics, computer science, statistics, or a related field.
- Candidates are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every listed requirement.
Perks and Benefits
- Flexible working arrangements that support better work-life balance, including hybrid and flexible options.
- Ongoing learning support through the Analytics Community, which promotes development, collaboration, thought leadership, and technical excellence.
- Ability to work from outside your assigned home location for up to 2 months each year.
