OpenShift Engineer

Introduction

IBM is looking to grow its Waterford engineering team with someone passionate about open source software, Linux-based systems, and deep technical programming. The group focuses on improving OpenShift Virtualization for Z, with work spanning device drivers, storage, networking, container orchestration, testing, and DevOps/CI/CD.

Role and Responsibilities

In this position, you will contribute to the full software development lifecycle for new and existing capabilities. The work includes shaping feature design and technical specifications, implementing solutions, finding and fixing defects, analyzing performance, sharing code with upstream open source repositories, and helping resolve customer issues. The role is based onsite three days each week.

Preferred Education

Bachelor's degree.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

• Strong motivation to develop container-related software on Linux, including Go and Bash scripting.
• Interest in contributing to open source communities such as KubeVirt and Kubernetes.
• Working knowledge of performance metric collection.
• Hands-on experience with source control tools such as Git, Bash scripting, Go programming, and test automation tools such as Jenkins.
• Understanding of operating system interfaces, including network cards and storage systems.
• Experience gathering performance metrics.

Preferred Technical and Professional Experience

• Any prior open source contributions.
• Practical knowledge of Linux container platforms, especially Kubernetes or KubeVirt.
• Experience with Linux on IBM Z.
