Role overview

We are supporting a major client involved in Britain’s high-speed rail infrastructure programme to hire a Configuration Controller. This position sits at the core of the technical change governance process and plays a key role in keeping complex programme controls accurate and disciplined.

What the role involves

As the Configuration Controller, you will manage the full lifecycle of Technical Change Requests and Technical Authority Communications, from their initial submission through board review and approval to final implementation. You will also prepare submission packs, issue weekly progress updates, and make sure all actions and approvals are tracked properly.

You will act as the main point of coordination for technical change across several live contracts. This includes daily interaction with engineers, project teams, and commercial stakeholders, as well as following up on progress, removing blockers where possible, and keeping everyone informed. In addition, you will maintain the work instructions and training materials that support the process and provide practical assistance to Configuration Managers when baselines and submissions need to be updated.

Background and working context

This is a permanent position based in the South East region, with location flexibility between Birmingham and London and a hybrid working pattern of three days in the office. The role sits within the rail sector and is tied to a high-profile infrastructure programme.

The advertised salary is £55,000 to £60,000 per year, and the package includes a pension contribution of 12%.

What success looks like

The ideal candidate will already have experience in a formal change control environment within a large, complex programme. You should be familiar with configuration management standards, comfortable using document management and configuration management tools, and able to handle large volumes of data accurately and at speed. Strong communication skills are also essential, as the role requires regular engagement with a broad range of technical and commercial teams.

This is a highly visible role rather than a purely administrative back-office position. You will be actively involved in the governance of technical change and will have a direct impact on how major programme decisions are controlled and implemented.
