Role Overview

The Assistant Project Manager supports the Project Manager or Senior Project Manager by handling assigned tasks and helping coordinate the daily flow of project work. This entry-level APM role is intended to build capability in the construction process and improve familiarity with commercial construction sites.

The position may support one or several projects at a time, and project size and duration can vary widely. All work must be completed in line with company policies, ethical expectations, and business goals.

  • Support one or more projects and, in some cases, take on small projects directly.
  • Work with management to create a personal development plan.
  • Develop knowledge of the local construction market.
  • Build technical understanding of mechanical and plumbing systems, code requirements, and Hermanson construction standards.

Pre-Construction and Construction Duties

  • Keep plan sets current in ACC Build or the project folder.
  • Create procurement and submittal logs using equipment matrices and specifications.
  • Compile and organize submittal packages.
  • Issue submittals and maintain submittal logs.

  • Process purchase orders.
  • Monitor and update procurement logs.
  • Distribute submittal, RFI, and procurement logs.
  • Coordinate journal adjustments with the Project Accountant.
  • Set up and monitor per diem or subsistence payments.
  • Collect documents and assemble closeout packages.
  • Work with Site Safety to understand audit findings and improve jobsite safety awareness.
  • Gain exposure to BIM and detailing workflows.
  • Understand construction schedules and how they are built.
  • Prepare subcontracts.
  • Track startup, installation verification, and pre-commissioning forms as required.
  • Create RFIs when needed, including sketches and markups on contract documents.
  • Prepare submittal packages and verify them against drawings and building standards.
  • Draft equipment purchase orders and confirm accuracy against drawings, submittals, quotes, and standards.
  • Review drawing revisions and identify possible scope impacts.
  • Update budgets through revisions and maintain change order logs.
  • Gain exposure to estimating, including quantity and material takeoffs from engineered drawings.
  • Gain exposure to conceptual estimating from architectural drawings or projects with limited drawing information.
  • Calculate and prepare change orders as needed.
  • Learn how to prepare and present monthly financial reports such as ECAC and stats.
  • Regularly walk assigned projects.

Accountabilities and KPIs

  • Maintain an effective document control system and keep it updated consistently across projects.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with foremen, project managers, and project coordinators.

Skills and Experience

  • Working knowledge of tools such as ACC Build, Microsoft Office, Bluebeam Revu, D365, or comparable systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Good time management and prioritization skills.
  • A strong sense of urgency and responsiveness.
  • Ability to earn trust and build dependable customer relationships through professionalism and sincerity.
  • Professional appearance, conduct, grooming, and business attire that reflect credibility and competence.
  • Willingness to support field personnel and serve customers on active projects.
  • Flexibility to work full time on site when needed, including before and after scheduled project hours depending on project demands and supervisor direction.
  • Physical ability to walk on rough, icy, or muddy ground; climb stairs and ladders; work safely at heights; and remain effective in outdoor weather conditions for extended periods.
