Custodial Worker

Position Overview

This role is hands-on custodial work focused on cleaning and basic upkeep of county buildings and surrounding grounds. The person in this position will use the correct cleaning methods, materials, and tools to help keep facilities clean, safe, and orderly. Work is performed under close supervision and follows a set routine.

Core Duties

• Clean floors by scrubbing, mopping, waxing, and polishing them.
• Remove dust from and shine furniture surfaces.
• Wash windows, trim/woodwork, and fixtures.
• Keep restrooms clean and maintained.
• Vacuum carpeted areas.
• Carry out other housekeeping and cleaning tasks as needed.
• Move office furniture and equipment when required.
• Replace light bulbs, restock restroom supplies, and support simple building or equipment repairs.
• Sweep walkways, mow grass, rake leaves, and help keep outdoor areas neat.

Education and Experience

Applicants should have any combination of training and work experience equal to finishing any level of primary or secondary schooling that did not lead to a high school diploma or equivalent credential.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

• Working familiarity with the materials, methods, and equipment commonly used in janitorial tasks.
• Ability to understand and carry out simple verbal and written directions.

Other Requirements

This work involves routine physical labor in cleaning and light maintenance, including the ability to push, pull, and lift equipment and furniture weighing up to 75 pounds. The job may also require working outdoors in changing weather conditions.

Licensing Requirement

If the position includes driving responsibilities, the candidate must hold a valid driver’s license and be eligible for coverage under Madison County’s risk management policy. Not every custodial position includes driving duties.
