Job description
About the Company
Hermanson Company is a long-established mechanical contracting business serving the Puget Sound region since 1979. What began as a family-run sheet metal contractor has evolved into a partner-led, full-service mechanical construction, design, and maintenance organization with a role in the broader U.S. construction sector.
The company emphasizes high standards, professionalism, integrity, and strong team culture. It seeks people who are motivated, ethical, and focused on delivering dependable results. Hermanson highlights core values centered on client service, family, character, teamwork, appreciation, and continuous learning and innovation.
Role Overview
Safety is treated as a core part of the organization’s identity, not simply a compliance task. The Field Safety Manager is responsible for helping reduce job-related risk, observing operations to identify and remove hazardous activities, and strengthening policies and practices that support occupational health and safety awareness. The role supports the goal of achieving zero-incident job sites and works closely with general contractors, field teams, and other stakeholders to keep employees, subcontractors, vendors, and customers safe.
The posted compensation for this role is $115,000 to $130,000 per year. Actual pay may differ based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Promote a strong safety mindset across all levels of the organization by encouraging leaders and team members to inspire safe behavior every day.
- Supervise and conduct one-on-one meetings with assigned Safety Coordinators.
- Serve as the primary contact for investigating accidents, incidents, and near misses, and oversee the full investigation process.
- Determine the root causes of accidents and injuries, including whether they could have been prevented.
- Speak with customers, supervisors, and employees to understand working conditions and the events that led to incidents.
- Review corrective actions taken after an incident and assess whether they were effective.
- Partner with customers to address safety issues that arise on the job.
- Manage active injury claims and oversee return-to-work arrangements for light-duty and salary-continuation employees, coordinating with the Safety Manager and Approach retro group manager.
- Support foremen and provide monthly updates to leadership on accident trends, root causes, cost impact, and prevention measures.
- Regularly visit job sites and shops with foremen, superintendents, and project managers to identify hazards, unsafe behaviors, and unsafe conditions, and to intervene when needed.
- Lead new-hire orientation and site-specific safety onboarding for Hermanson employees.
- Plan and deliver crew training on topics such as forklift use, aerial lifts, fall protection, trenching and excavation, and confined space safety.
- Prepare site-specific safety manuals, fall protection work plans, and job hazard analyses.
- Help maintain and improve the company accident prevention program.
- Develop procedures and systems that protect people from illness and injury and reduce damage to property.
- Perform weekly safety audits on assigned projects and document findings, including hazard corrections and safety visits.
- Inspect facilities, equipment, machinery, and safety gear to identify and correct potential hazards.
- Conduct drug testing when required.
- Review plans and specifications for new machinery and equipment to confirm they meet safety standards.
- Evaluate employee safety programs and recommend enhancements.
- Ensure foremen comply with DOSH safety and health rules, complete Pre-Task Planning, and follow the Hermanson accident prevention program.
- Attend monthly safety committee meetings and verify that job sites hold weekly safety meetings.
- Maintain organized safety records and reports for company-wide use.
- Update policies and programs in line with Washington State laws and changes to safety and health codes.
- Cover worker safety, property protection, motor vehicle safety, and safety for the public and customers within applicable programs.

- 100% completion and documentation of required training and certifications

Working Conditions and Schedule
This is a field-focused position that supports project teams and customers directly. Depending on project needs, the role may require full-time presence at a site and, at times, work before or after the scheduled project hours. Work location and hours may shift based on project requirements as directed by the supervisor. The position may involve traveling to different job sites daily, or even multiple sites in one day.
The work can involve physically demanding conditions such as climbing steep stairs, using scissor lifts and boom lifts, walking uneven, icy, or muddy ground, climbing ladders, working at heights, and spending long periods in outdoor weather conditions. Access to job sites may also require customer and general contractor approval.
Education and Experience
A bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health or a related field is preferred, along with 4 years of safety experience in the construction industry, or an equivalent mix of education and experience. The role also requires at least 3 years of safety experience.
Required certifications must be current and maintained, including authorization to teach OSHA 10/30, forklift certification, first aid/CPR, and respiratory fit testing.
Capabilities
The ideal candidate should understand Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act requirements and be familiar with DOSH standards. Strong leadership, presentation, reading, writing, and reporting skills are important. The role also requires the ability to work effectively in challenging field environments and adapt to changing site locations and project conditions.
Benefits
Hermanson provides a comprehensive benefits package that supports health, financial security, and professional development. Offerings include competitive compensation with bonus opportunities, medical/prescription/dental/vision coverage with zero to low weekly premiums, a 401(k) plan with discretionary company match, generous paid time off, disability income protection, life insurance for employees and eligible dependents, optional critical illness and accident coverage, career growth support, in-house training, certificate and tuition reimbursement, a wellness program, and an Employee Assistance Program.
