Role overview
Join the South Carolina Department of Corrections as a Horticulture Supervisor at the Manning Reentry/Work Release Center in Columbia, South Carolina. This position supports horticulture and grounds maintenance work within a correctional setting, with responsibility for guiding inmate workers and maintaining safe, organized work areas.
Key duties
- Work under the direction of the chief horticulturist to plan, oversee, and track a horticulture program for inmates at the assigned location and, when needed, at other sites.
- Carry out horticulture and grounds maintenance tasks alongside inmates to support the program and related special projects.
- Train and supervise inmate participants and assigned staff in caring for complex grounds, including landscape installation, landscape upkeep, vegetable gardening, and seasonal plant displays.
- Keep equipment in working order and handle inventory for chemicals.
- Remain accountable for tools and equipment and ensure the work area stays secure.
- Set up and maintain a greenhouse.
- Support special events when assigned.
- Obtain a South Carolina applicator's pesticide license within the first year of employment.
- Complete four weeks of SCDC Basic Training after being hired.
Minimum qualifications
Applicants must meet the State of South Carolina minimum requirements and the SCDC minimum requirements. A high school diploma is required, along with custodial, groundskeeping, or maintenance experience directly related to the job area, or alternatively a horticulture degree focused on the science and management of plants. The role also requires possession of, or the ability to obtain within the first year, a South Carolina applicator's pesticide license.
